Comedy Zone Presents:- Russell Howard |
Aged just 19 Russell plotted himself on the comedy map by getting to the final of Channel 4's So You Think Your Funny? competition in only his fifth ever gig. Since then, things have been pretty hectic… Russell has been busy cementing his place as one of the hottest properties in comedy with his BBC6 Music show every Sunday, loads of Mock The Week and Never Mind The Buzzcocks on BBC2, Would I Lie To You? and Live At The Apollo on BBC1, Law of the Playground on Channel 4 and Tough Gig, The Brits and The British Comedy Awards on ITV, phew…tiring. But it is on stage where Russell really storms it. A complete sell out at Edinburgh 2004-2006 Russell sold every ticket of his 2007 run before the Festival had even started and couldn't add extra dates fast enough. His first nationwide solo tour of if.comedy and Barry Award nominated show 'Wandering' was a complete sell out success. www.russell-howard.co.uk These shows usually sell out every time so book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are usually £10 unless otherwise stated and are available from The Marrs bar and Music City on 01905 26600 |

Official Receivers
These lads first got together to just knock out a few tunes, have a good time and maybe do a few gigs, nowadays, 16 years later they are an extremely hard working band, gigging consistently and booked up for months and months to come, and all that hard work pays dividends as you experience the inabililty to keep your feet still as a result of the non stop soul assault you are treated to. When it comes to delivering a high-energy Stax/Alantic-based show the Official Receivers have no equal. www.officialreceivers.net Tickets £6.00 and £8.00 on the door |

Dan Haynes
"If you like Paul Simon, Jack Johnson or Damien Rice then you'll love this..." With the majority of Dan’s recorded work being bare acoustic his live set had little need for anything other than a solo voice and guitar. However after meeting 'Corda' front man Robin Groucutt, a pianist, bassist, and percussionist and generally excellent musician, Dan found himself with fuller sound to play with than before. Taken in by this sound Dan spent the back end of last year writing and recording songs that would really make the most of the extra sounds now at his disposal. Dan's second album ‘Fruit from the Tree’ is due out this year. The first single we'll hear is 'Stung' which is out in August and from the sound bite above it sounds as though it'll be well worth the wait. I strongly advise you listen to their music online now. www.myspace.com/danhaynes £4.00 ticket and £5.00 on the door |

The George Cowley Experience
The George Cowley Experience emerged from a number of unsuccessful Worcester bands (The Nervous Fellahs, The Viagras, The RIP's) in the summer of 2001. Describing themselves as a "collective" rather than a fixed band in the traditional sense, the Cowleys draw on a eclectic range of influences - George Cowley himself, Bob Dylan, Wild Man Fischer, Jon Shuttleworth and The Blues. In actual fact discerning listeners, on first hearing the work of the Cowleys, will be able to identify many musical genres skillfully interwoven into the poetic Cowley message. Little else is known about the Cowleys except an unsual penchant for the celebrated wearing of an oft' misunderstood garment, the Trilby. In an atempt to educate the world, the Cowleys included a song on their debut album titled "Thrill me thrill me. Bring back the Trilby". www.thegeorgecowleyexperience.co.uk Support comes from crunchy pop stalker band "Will Dance For Chocolate." www.myspace.com/willdanceforchocolate £4.00 ticket and £5.00 on the door |

The Martin Harley Band
Martin Harley is a contemporary singer/songwriter and an extraordinary guitarist who has a gift for making music that feels as right and comfortable as your favourite pair of shoes, shoes that you can’t help but tap to the beat. Word has been spreading and Martin’s infectious songs have been winning new fans of all ages, from all walks of life and generating invitations to play across the globe. With a new album due out in Spring 2008 and his gig diary filling up rapidly, this trend looks set to continue. In his early twenties, disenchanted with suburban life in the UK, Martin went looking for adventure and music armed with a little money and an acoustic guitar. His travels took him across the continents, from the United States, to Africa, to India, and somewhere along the line he found himself writing music and playing in small bars across Australia whilst living out of a car. Using a converted 12-string he bought from a junk shop for $30 (and still uses to this day), his warm voice, earnest yet poetic lyrics, and distinctive guitar style made an impression. This is resal top calss talent brought to your doorstep. www.myspace.com/martinharleyband £8.00 a ticket and £10.00 on the door |

The Return, Travino Slaxx & We Do Kung Fu
The Return are a young band (16 to 17) from Birmingham who are as yet unsigned but I just like them and thought we should give them a shot, if their demo is any thing to go by, they play well beyond their years and I reckon they've got something. Very punchy punky stuff with just enough of teh ska feel. They remind me of the early days of Mybe (who you should check out these days by the way) www.myspace.com/mybe have a listen and see if you think I did the right thing.... www.myspace.com/thereturntheband Joe Patroni were supposed to play tonight but have unfortunately had to cancel due to a bereavement for one of the band members, So Trevino Slaxx have stepped into the breach at the last minute. Trevino Slaxx are Simon Pitt - Vocals Steve Badsey - Bass Guitar Sam Oliver - Guitar Keith Box - Drums Ian Oliver - Guitar and this will be their first gig www.myspace.com/trevinoslaxx WE DO KUNG FU try to write quirky 3 minute pop songs, and are influenced by a wide range of pop, punk and electro artists - none of which they can all agree on that they like. The band are currently playing as many live shows as possible in order to raise their profile, and are actively seeking professional management, a booking agent, a publisher, and, ultimately, a record contract! www.myspace.com/wedokungfu FREE ENTRY |

Acoustic Dodgy
The ‘Mighty Dodgy Vibe’ returns! In March this year Nigel Clark, Andy Miller and Mathew Priest took to the stage together again for the first time in almost a decade. Over Dodgy’s six-year rise to fame they released three albums and 12 Top 40 singles, including 3 Top 10s and the Top 5 hit ‘Good Enough’, still a staple of the Radio 2 playlist. In 1996 Dodgy sold out the Brixton Academy for three nights in a row and were awarded an unprecedented 90-minute Saturday evening slot on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival. Their desire to return to this festival vibe was a strong contributing factor to the band’s reunion, playing songs such as Staying Out For The Summer, So Let Me Go Far, Making The Most Of, Lovebirds, Water Under The Bridge, In A Room and the epic Grassman. Well they're here tonight with a nice unplugged intimate acoustic act... www.myspace.com/dodgyuk £12.00 a ticket and £15.00 on the door |

Justin Townes Earl
"Like the late Van Zandt, Earle uses a base of acoustic blues and prewar folk to build his own brand of American roots music." Nashville Scene With Justin Townes Earle’s pedigree come mixed blessings. As the son of legendary singer/songwriter Steve Earle, high expectations are the name of the game, and he’s shown that he is up to the task on The Good Life, crafting stark portraits and narrative tales with elements of blues, classic country and rock n’roll. A modern-day troubadour, Earle blends genres seamlessly, framing his songs in warm musical settings and creating tunes that could easily be mistaken for classics. “I started out to make an old timey country record, but I listen to so many other kinds of music,” Justin explained. “Some of the songs were rearranged on the spot and took on other lives and album is now more of an exploration of southern music.” Earle approaches universal topics like traveling and matters of the heart (“Hard Living”, “The Good Life”) with the same fervor with which he evokes the bleak loneliness of a Civil War soldier on “Lone Pine Hill”. www.myspace.com/justintownesearle £8.00 ticket and £10.00 on the door |
