Comedy Zone Presents:- Rob Deering, Matt Welcome and Jon Richardson |
Rob Deering exploded on to the comedy scene in 2000, reaching the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award semi-finals, the finals of the BBC New Comedy Award and the final of the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year Competition, as well as winning the prestigious Amused Moose New Talent Award. 2001 brought further success with Rob hosting the legendary Comedy Zone at the Edinburgh Festival; this led to a personal request from Emo Phillips to support him for his festival run. www.robdeering.com Matt Welcome's experience shines through his set like a floodlight, giving him a charismatic and confident air unmatched by almost any other stand-up working the circuit. His material is seemingly conversational, but the gags are all tucked away in there, jumping out at you with a sure steady pace. Sharp sarcasm and acute observations shape the style of his set, but all manner of comedic verbal misdirection is present. By Ira Rainey (BBC Bristol) www.mattwelcome.co.uk Jon Richardson began stand-up in May 2003, and within his first year reached the finals of the J20-sponsored Last Laugh competition. He established himself on the circuit, and in 2006 supported Alan Carr on his 60-date tour. His debut Edinburgh show, Spatula Pad, was nominated for the if.comedy award for best newcomer at the 2007 Fringe and helped him earn a nomination for the Chortle best breakthrough award in 2008. He also co-hosts the Sunday morning show on BBC 6 Music with Russell Howard who will be back here the first Thursday (3rd) of July. www.chortle.co.uk/comics/j/2881/jon_richardson Tickets are £10 and are available from The Marrs bar and Music City on 01905 26600 |

The George Cowley Experience
|
Begotten , not created, out of the early Jam nights here at the Marrs Bar back in 2001, The George Cowley Experience take their name from Worcester's Man of Letters, George Cowley. Musically this is a band that is hard to pigeon hole - their roots are in Blues Rock / Dylan / The Bonzos but their songs often speak of matters closer to home - Shefali, Evesham Knievel, Hereford (Land of a 10000 Charity Shops),Throckmorton and (Epicentre) Dudley. With four CD's under their surreal belt, tonight sees this good rocking band giving its first outing to some material off their forthcoming album "Not Dead Yet", inspired by one of George's recent letters to the local press that declared he had survived a serious cancer operation. Subject to legal clearance, songs on the new CD are rumoured to include "Reg Box - Tireless Fund Raiser", "Fat Boy Fat" and "Catherine Brewer's Legs". www.myspace.com/thegeorgecowleyexperience www.thegeorgecowleyexperience.co.uk Support comes from crunchy stalker pop rockers "Will Dance for Chocolate", Marrs bar favourites who are fronted by two lovely women who just wanna have fun (as well as a huge recording contract, if any one out there could oblige…) www.myspace.com/willdanceforchocolate £4.00 ticket and £5.00 on the door |

John Power
|
John Power (born John Timothy Power on 14 September 1967 in Liverpool) is an English singer-songwriter and former frontman of 90's rock band Cast. Prior to Cast, Power was the bass guitarist with The La's, who had success in 1990 with their hit single, "There She Goes", and their eponymous album which reached cult status. After leaving The La's in 1993 to form Cast, with whom he sung, played guitar and wrote songs, after four albums and a string of successful singles, Cast split in 2002. Power went on to release a solo album, Happening For Love in 2003. In 2005, it was known that The La's were reforming, with Power returning to his bass duties. It is then unknown whether he would pursue further solo projects, or be a member of The La's full time. In October 2006 Power released an album entitled Willow She Weeps on the Tanuki Tanuki Limited record label, after the issue of the limited edition 7" vinyl single - "Jumpin Bean" b/w "Willow Weep".My new material is best summed up as acoustic with a bit of Captain Beefheart bass, using bass drum and toms and a fair few handclaps muses John after a session, reflecting on where this past year has taken his new material and what has infused and coloured its shape and form." www.myspace.com/johnpowerukcom www.johnpower.uk.com £10 ticket and £12.00 on the door |

Gwyn Ashton
|
Gwyn Ashton's solo show encompasses a unique blend of hard-edged blues, roots, country, rock, boogie and funky grooves and rhythms, all played with dexterity on his old National steel, lap-slide, 3-string cigar box, 12 & 6-string guitars, mandolin, harmonica, bass pedal and stompbox. Gwyn is now also working with Brit singer/songwriter Peter Parker in the role of producer and guitarist. He's also playing bass on the recordings and contributing backing vocals. This is a new and exciting project. Peter's songs are very retro in the late 70s West Coast power pop mould (think Tom Petty, Greg Kihn Band) yet have a current sound ready for today's market. Check out their video below and also feel free to drop in at Peter Parker's myspace page linked below and tell Peter how wonderful the guitar solo is! Gwyn Ashton is endorsed by: Fender (Australia), Vigier Guitars (France), Vintage Guitars, Jacques Stompboxes (France), National Reso-Phonic Guitars, Seymour Duncan Pickups, Hiscox Cases, Koch Guitar Electronics, Graph-Tech Industries, Award-Session and Dunlop Strings. www.myspace.com/gwynashtonmusic £5.00 Admission |

Joanne Shaw Taylor
|
For the last couple of years, Joanne Shaw Taylor has been busy redefining the meaning of the cliché, "plays like a girl"..... How did you spend your summer vacation when you were 17 years old? She spent hers touring Europe with the super group D.U.P. with fellow band members Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), Candy Dulfer (Prince) and Jimmy Cliff. Paul Andrew Ulysses Lamb was born in Detroit and raised on the streets of an east side community known as Harper Woods. At age three, his father bought him a Jimi Hendrix album for his birthday. It changed his life forever. With his self-taught guitar skills, soulful rock voice, and desire to play music wherever and whenever he could, P-A-U-L hit the road. He hasn't stopped touring since. He has shared the stage with many renowned artists. Joanne Shaw Taylor and P-A-U-L first shared a stage at the Marrs Bar in February 2007. Those who were there witnessed a meeting of musical minds and a blistering Blues Jam that proceeded into the wee hours of the morning. Due to popular demand they have decided to embark on a mini UK tour together. P-A-U-L and his all female band will kick things off at 9pm followed by Joanne Shaw Taylor and an unforgettable finale. Be sure not to miss it! www.P-A-U-Lmusic.com www.joanneshawtaylor.com www.myspace.com/joanneshawtaylor Ticket £5.00 and £7.00 on the door |

4' Fingers
|
Dougie left at the end of 2004. and was replaced by Ben from Bristol on bass. They still played one off shows but decided to give fulltime touring a break. Towards the end of 2006 Tom decided to call it a day and a month or two later, Ben had to leave for a new Job and his band back in Bristol, Rob and Dave however did not want to call it a day. Tom finished the year of shows booked and after nearly 2 years out of the band, Dougie rejoined along with new guitarist JON (formally of gash).Bringing the band bang upto date and back with Darren as manager,4ft fingers are set to return to give the uk scene a good kick up the ass...and get back to basics where it matters...the music!! not the scenesters or hairdos!! The band have just finished recording their new album "New Beginings of old stories" 12 brand new punk rock explosive tunes......To coincide with the release, the band will be doing a massive promotional campaign to let everyone know they are back for business with a uk tour kicking off 28th feb - 27th April !! with european and festival dates to follow ! Keith James plays Nick Drake with support from Corda |
"An absolute must" Mark Radcliffe - BBC Radio 2 "Keith's concert is a loving re-appraisal of nick drake's timeless music" Trevor Dann - Nick Drake biographer The overwhelming acclaim of these concerts has reached such proportion that Keith and Rick played Nick Drake's music at Glastonbury Festival 2007 The recognition and popularity of Nick Drake is such that he will always be seen as a landmark, a beauty, a thread of creativity that will forever span the rapids of modern music. Nick recorded only three albums in his short career and has since been as somewhat of a mystery. at the time he was largely unnoticed, considered to be too fragile and painful to engage the wilder audiences of the early 70s. Now more than 30 years on nick drake has become the most revered of all English singer/songwriters. Around 6 years ago, Keith James, also a singer/songwriter and acoustic music producer, began to perform Nick's songs live in concert. To such affect that together with rick foot he has now played over 300 dates throughout 8 UK tours and recorded many of 12 of nick's songs. Now, during this auspicious year, Keith and Rick return to play another extensive UK tour of this haunting and unique music. Why? - "because this music is exceptional - timeless, because by some odd twist of fate, i grew up playing, singing and writing in such a similar style that i have had little to wrestle with - because of this i feel able to engage audiences into prose - it will always remain an incredible honour to play Nick's music". www.keith-james.com www.songsofnickdrake.com £8.00 ticket aND £10.00 on the door |

Amber Rubarth and Adam Levy (Trust me on this one!) |
I know it's a Tuesday and all that but if you do come to this gig you are going to feel real smug the next day when you see your work mates and ask what they did last night and they tell you all about Coronation Street or Eastenders, and you can tell them of a near epiphany you witnessed at The Marrs Bar last night... as this is an absolutely amazing talent literaly passing through town tonight. Our good friend Amy Wadge put them in touch with us and she told them what a wonderful crowd you all are they just had to come and check us out. Seriously, this will blow your mind! Adam Levy is best known for his tenure as the featured guitarist in Norah Jones' Handsome Band. He played on her breakout 2002 disc Come Away with Me, her '04 follow-up Feels Like Home, and her latest CD Not Too Late. In his downtime between steady gigs with Jones, Levy has been onstage and/or in the studio with Rosanne Cash, Amos Lee, M. Ward, and up-and-coming Aussie artist Eran James. www.myspace.com/adamlevysings Amber Rubarth, as Music Connection (who put her in their Hot 100 Artists this year) says, Rubarth has "excellent mastery of the guitar, equally impressive on piano.. and a soaring voice that can belt out any tune... she may become unstoppable." Amber's debut album on Sounden Recordings, "New Green Lines" escapes May 6th, 2008. Until then, catch her on the road throughout the U.S. and Europe. Unkle Monty, Cobweb Dilemas and SOULS
|
Unkle Monty are pushing forward with their tight blend of Rock and Indie. They are the real deal, searing bass lines and curveball vocal melody, with rock solid drums, cutting across various genres to appeal to many. Hearing is believing. Come and check them out on www.myspace.com/49360310 Some people say Cobweb Dilemmas sound like Pixies having a fight with Talking Heads whilst Joy Division hold their coats. Sometimes we agree. In 2008 we will be playing more lovley shows across the UK with a few festival dates thown in for bad measure but what do you think? www.myspace.com/cobwebdilemmas With vocals like gravel and irate guitars, Souls are no-frills, straightforward rock. Based in Bristol, their debut album Gold Dust arrives on local label Sugar Shack and is 10 tracks of driving riffs and growling vocals that sits somewhere between Therapy?, Queens Of The Stone Age and, occasionally, Clutch. www.myspace.com/soulsarmy FREE ADMISSION |

Ezio
|
Remember the last time a song really reached you? Straight in, deep inside, talking directly to you, about what you feel - just as if this song was written especially for you, about you? Well - this is what the music of EZIO is about - deep, honest, emotional songs that hit a raw nerve. You really must experience one of their incredible live shows, which often leave their audience with shiny eyes and in an unbelievably enthusiastic mood. But far from this being a dreamy introverted songwriter show, you need to imagine two mad men playing Rock n Roll on acoustic guitars!! This powerful and exciting show is tempered with beautiful ballads, tales of longing, aching love, which have the disconcerting habit of catching you unaware with a line you could have written yourself, had you been able to put these deeply buried feelings into words. www.myspace.com/eziouk £10.00 ticket and £12.00 on the door |

Introducing David Celia, based out of Toronto, Canada - a world class musician who has played for audiences all over the Europe, U.S.A. and Canada. Fred Zeppelin
|
Fred Zeppelin is a tribute band to Led Zeppelin based in the original band's heartland of the West Midlands of England. Drummer Steve 'Blackie' Black also heads Midland talent agency and music organisation Moby Music- named after Led Zeppelin's drum solo "Moby Dick". Voted by Kerrangs readers as one of the top ten bands to see, a large compliment seeing as though they were the only tribute band on the list. Robert Plant has been to see them four times and for some time, his quotation about them 'Accept no substitute' appeared on their flyers. Jason Bonham has also drummed with them in a one-off cameo encore appearance; his late uncle Mick Bonham used to introduce their shows in the family hometown of Redditch. £8.00 a ticket and £10.00 on the door |
