Mumbo Jumbo Album Launch
|
Mumbo-Jumbo Album Launch Oliver Carpenter, Abby Brant & Chris Lomas - launch their new album 'Life of Riley'. A bold and eclectic mix of material the album features 13 tracks, 11 written by the band individually or collectively, one written for them and one classic, some of which currently appear in their current live set and others written especially for the album. Live Mumbo-Jumbo produce their special ‘Musical Gumbo’ taking elements from blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, country and their own Brit folk heritage to deliver an original and entertaining brand of music they clearly enjoy. Oliver, Chris and Abby apply their combined 115 years of performance and around 5000 gigs across the world to entertain anyone with ears. Their musical address may be ‘c/o the blues’ but their unique energetic blend of styles appeals to a wide audience - all delivered with a large splash of humour, touch, flair and foot stomping to boot! The new album does all this and more. Featuring a number of special guests including gypsy guitarist Remi Harris, percussion session man Tony Baylis and a number of other musicians, 'Life of Riley' takes all thats good about Mumbo-Jumbo and fills in the gaps adding complexity and enabling the band to try new things impossible in the live set (gospel choirs, four part trumpet harmonies etc). Oliver and Abby are both well known at the Marrs Bar as key members of The Big Blues Tribe. They will be joined tonight by some of the musicians on the album and generally plan to 'have a ball'. www.mumbo-jumbo.biz Ticket price £6 - including a £2 discount off albums purchased on the night. |

POSTPONED UNTIL SUNDAY 5th MARCH Chris Difford Click here to buy online |
CHRIS HAS HAD TO POSTPONE UNTIL MARCH 5th AS HE IS RECORDING FOR JOOLS HOLLAND'S HOOTENANNY TODAY... The double Ivor Novello winning, walking enigma that is Chris Difford, one half of the inimitable and timeless Squeeze: with his sometimes bewildering kitchen sink lyrics and urban folk stories, Difford has brought us characters and sketches from every day life, turning that mundane into the beautiful, the urbane into the exquisite, for over 30 years. With his partner, collaborator, friend and Squeeze co-founder Glenn Tilbrook, Chris has written some of the most enduring and best-loved songs of our time. Up The Junction, Cool For Cats and Labeled With Love, to name but a few, all have their well earned places on recurrent play, in radio stations across the world. And Squeeze now enjoy a new generation of fans, with celebrity admirers such as Lily Allen and Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse and The Feeling. Difford has released 3 critically acclaimed solo albums, toured relentlessly both inside and outside of Squeeze, and as one of the country’s most respected songwriters has co-written with a host of musicians and performers that reads as a veritable who’s who of the industry. One of his most recent co-writes appears on the best selling Ollie Murs album, proving Difford’s classic yet still contemporary touch. And he I increasingly in demand, with several more interesting collaborations in the works – the most anticipated of these of course being the new Squeeze album that he and Tilbrook are rumored to be writing. Difford is well known within the industry for his twice-yearly songwriting retreats, which do exactly what they say on the tin. He recently curated the fascinating Songs In The Key Of London concert which saw a host of thirty or more performers including Suggs, Phil Daniels, Glenn Tilbrook, Elvis Costello, Chas Smash gather together at the Barbican to perform songs by Londoners about London. He also hosted a serious of school visit inner-city writers workshop across 4 weeks as part of a Arts Council initiative. www.chrisdifford.com £12.00 ticket and £15.00 on the door Click here to buy online |

Dire Streets Click here to buy online |
Dire Streets are an authentic tribute to the music of one of the UK's most distinctive and popular bands. Fronted by John Brunsdon, a lifelong guitar picker and admirer of Mark Knopfler's unique style of playing, Dire Streets faithfully reproduce the sounds of Dire Straits from the stripped down 70s classics to the extended live arrangements of the 80s. John formed the band in 2009 after meeting drummer Dik Chandler, who has played with several leading tribute acts including Wholelottaled and Are You Experienced. John and Dik brought in a quality line-up of musicians to complete the group, and the audience reaction to Dire Streets performances has been very positive. John Brunsdon says: "We aim to play a good mix of the hits that everyone will recognise as well as some lesser known album tracks for the real aficionados, we want everyone to be included and have a good time!" The bands' set includes shorter songs from the early era such as 'Lady Writer' right through to complex anthems like 'Telegraph Road'. No night would be complete without 'Sultans of Swing' which gets a special rendition over 12 minutes long! Dire Streets make no attempt to look like the original, so no headbands and pink suits! Just brilliant guitar playing and songs skilfully arranged with the enthusiasm, attention to detail and respect they deserve. As an owner of a club where the band appeared recently remarked "At last! A decent tribute to Dire Straits" Dire Straits were one of the major guitar based bands of the late 70s. Despite forming at the height of Punk, front man Mark Knopfler's distinctive guitar picking style gave the band an alternative and instantly recognisable sound. The Band reached its peak in the mid 80s playing larger venues including a memorable slot at Live Aid. So far record sales have reached over 100 million worldwide and Knopfler is still regarded as one of the finest guitarists and songwriters this country has produced. www.direstreets.co.uk £6.00 a ticket and £7.00 on the door Click here to buy online |

Project 3580 Fund Raiser (Day 1)
|
In April this year Matt Bird held a two-day all-day gig at Marrs Bar to raise money for a school in Sierra Leone with which the school that Matt teaches at, Great Barr, has a partnership. The two days raised an astonishing £9000 in total to fight Malaria in one of the worlds most underdeveloped countries, helped brilliantly by the likes of Stuntdog, Skew Whiff, Tallulah Fix, The Roving Crows, Highway 5, Stompin' on Spiders and Calm Like A Riot, to name but a few, and of course the students from Great Barr who helped, and all who donated, sponsored, and attended a great two days. However, his work still continues over there and there will be another event on Sunday December 11th at the Marrs Bar. Please let Matt know if you are free on that date and would be able to perform, help, watch, or please pass the message on to anyone you know who would like to join us again. Your help is always appreciated. Matt Bird Minimum donation of £3.00 (but you can pay more if you want ;) ) |

Ian Parker with support from Jake Aprea Price |
Over the last 10 years, Ian Parker has established himself throughout Europe and even the US as one of the leading roots songwriters and performers of his generation. With four albums and two live DVDs released through Ruf Records, Parker has amassed a very respectable back catalogue, and an expansive following to match. Due to begin touring again with his exciting five piece band later in the year in support of his new EP 'Demons and Doubters', Ian is beginning 2010 with a series of solo acoustic gigs aimed at presenting his back catalogue and much of his newest material in its 'purest form'. The idea began last summer when Ian was invited to headline the acoustic stage at the famous Bayfront Festival in Duluth, Minnesota. "The thought of going out there in front of all those people on my own in Duluth scared the hell out of me, but it turned out to be a really exciting and rewarding experience" said Parker. Further solo acoustic shows in New York's Greenwich Village, served to increase Ian's confidence, and for a limited period, fans back home will get to see and hear him performing in this compelling and intimate manner. http://ianparker.biz £8.00 a ticket and £10.00 on the door |

Matchless
with support from Heroes of Hanoi |
Once upon a time a musician had a vision... to put together a band consisting of the very best local musicians he knew; the best drummer, the best bass player, the best vocalist, and so on. If you will - a Super Group - admittedly a big ambition. It's taken some doing, it's taken some time, it's here. The musician with the vision was Harry Baldwin. He picked up the guitar at the age of eight, took up the piano at nine and the organ at twelve. He is now an experienced keyboardist, guitarist, singer, composer, lyricist and award winning songwriter. He's been in The Midnight Movers, Muleskinner, Young Gifted Liars and The Whoo. He currently plays with the renowned local covers band Blind Lemon and is a regular participant with the Marrs Bar's House Band. The foundation stone for the band is drummer Trevor Cornforth. He came from a musical family. As a teenager he listened to a lot of Big Band and Jazz. He has worked in various musical settings from Punk to Soul. He took two years out to study music at South Birmingham College. Trevor also worked with singer/songwriter Andy Wickett, who was a former member of Duran Duran and wrote their big hit "Girls On Film". Working closely with the drums, as every bass player should, is John Hepburn. An experienced musician with a rock steady ability to pick out interesting bass lines. On guitar is Gary Oswell. He has played with such luminaries as Luther Grosvenor, Mott The Hoople and Spooky Tooth. He's also a published songwriter, providing tracks on the latest Luther Grosvenor album "If You Dare", which was released in June 2011. Fronting the band is vocalist Damian Matthews. He has been touring in shows and bands for the last ten years. His musical tastes and singing ability range from Heavy Metal and Soft Rock Ballads to Jazz, Blues, RnB, Pop and Rockabilly. With a voice that soars and burns, he is a well known local personality. Together they play all those great covers songs that many bands would like to tackle but shy away from. They also throw in a sprinkling of self-penned material, as is their want! As their Facebook page states, The Matchless are... "Five talented, experienced musicians, playing stuff the others won't!" Although the band only formed in August 2011 there has already been great interest expressed in The Matchless, including press coverage. So, come along on Christmas Eve, see what all the fuss is about and give yourself a festive present in the form of one of the best local musical experiences you can find. www.thematchless.co.uk Heroes Of Hanoi are a three-piece Indie band based in Worcester. Playing self-penned numbers they also like to throw in a few covers here and there. They have recently released their 2nd album 'A Last Cry For Bohemia' and the 3rd album launches in February 2012. Influences: As a band we have different influences not just Indie music. Vocalist Harry: OASIS, The Beatles, Paul Weller/The Jam, The Who, The Stone Roses, The Cribs, Arctic Monkeys, Babyshambles, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Smiths, Joy Division, Kasabian, Small Faces, The Kinks, Beady Eye. Drummer Pete: Wu Tang Clan, Nas, Blink 182, Foreign Beggars, Rancid, NOFX, AFI, The Clash, J5, KiD CuDi, Ratatat, Public Enemy, NWA, A Tribe Called Quest, Cut Chemist, Beastie Boys, Gang Starr, D12, MF Doom, Deltron, Del, The Funky Homosapien, Hieroglyphics. Boozestock Day 1
|
Can Boozestock really be ten years old? The post Christmas, pre new year musical shindig began back in 2001 by Rhythm & Booze in a bid to give gig-goers, boozers and music lovers an extra tasty treat to cure those post festive blues and prepare for the forthcoming new year, a reason to keep on celebrating throughout those precious days off work. Prior to the first Boozestock the R&B team had been putting on regular gigs at Worcester’s finest venue The Marrs Bar, bringing in out of town bands to play alongside the hottest new local acts, so it only seemed natural to put on a best of…show towards the end of the year and so Boozestock was born. The debut two day event was a huge success dragging in the stragglers of the street desperately in the need of live music and before long an annual event had been born. Rhythm & Booze threw together a mish-mash of styles to create something a little unique to the Worcester music scene, indie bands battled with punk, singer-songwriters made way for metal in the world of Boozestock anything goes. Early years saw local talents such as Volta, Fry & Elsie and A Stones Throw stomp the boards alongside out of town heroes Singles, 35 Seconds, Crazyface and Mybe among others. From such humble beginnings Boozestock has evolved, over the years, new curators such as Pete Adams and Siani Driver have come in and offered new twists to the Boozestock tale, the original Rhythm & Booze team returned a couple of years back to offer up a pub quiz and a percussion ensemble between bands. This years Boozestock, the tenth two night affair promises to be the biggest and best yet, as I write this Marzy and the current Boozestock team are beavering away in a bid to create the most memorable night in Boozestock history! £3.00 admission |
